International Tiger Day
Daltonganj, July 29: On the occasion of International Tiger Day, which is observed annually on July 29, Jharkhand's Principal Chief Conservator of Forest and Chief Wildlife Warden (CWLW) Ashish Rawat and Maharashtra's Chief Conservator of Forest and Field Director (FD) at Palamu Tiger Reserve Kumar Ashutosh are in Chandrapur, a part of Maharashtra's Tadoba Andhari National Park.
Today, the two officers will attend a meeting in Chandrapur that will be presided over by Union Minister of Environment, Forestry, and Climate Change Bhupinder Yadav.
The field directors of the 52 tiger reserves in India as well as top members of the National Tiger Conservation Authority will also attend the meeting.
Interestingly enough, on International Tiger Day, Kumar Ashutosh is in Maharashtra, while his two deputies in the PTR here in Jharkhand—one from the South division, Mukesh Kumar, and the other from the North division, Kumar Ashish—are both absent from the PTR today due to their attendance at the Jharkhand High Court in Ranchi today in connection with a PIL filed years ago.
However, the deputy director of PTR's South division, Mukesh Kumar, in collaboration with the field director Kumar Ashutosh, has requested his team of representatives from the divisions South and North to gather at Maromar to organise a symposium to commemorate the International Tiger Day.
The PTR's field director, Kumar Ashutosh, declared, "We have sent our proposal for the tiger safari here to our main chief conservator of forest and chief wildlife warden."
"Tiger, leopard, bison, and deer will all be included in our proposed safari. Ashish Rawat, our main chief wildlife warden and chief conservator of forests, has kindly forwarded the Jharkhand government our application for a safari in the PTR right now," he continued.
Ashutosh reported that 38 leopards had been camera trapped in the PTR so far.
When asked why the two tigers have not yet been directly sighted by any PTR staff members or captured on camera, despite the genetic analysis of scat conducted by the Wildlife Institute of India, Dehradun, which confirmed their presence in PTR, Kumar Ashutosh responded, "We know these two are here and doing fine."
"We have also sent a plan for the establishment of 4 soft release centres around the PTR, including both of its divisions North and South, to raise and nurture cheetah, deer, and other prey in an effort to increase the prey base. The field director stated, "We now discover deer in 30 or more numbers at our grassland Lokaiyya where we first burned down our year-old grasses only to have fresh palatable grasses coming over there.
The two deputy directors, Kumar Ashish and Mukesh Kumar, added that the wildlife needs four things in order to survive, including a suitable habitat, a sufficient prey base and food supply, access to clean water, and safety and security.
We have been requesting and encouraging our staff to make sure that none of these four things are not met for the benefit of the wildlife, they stated.
