Indian physicist and meteorologist's 104th birthday is commemorated by Google : Anna Mani


On Tuesday, Google released a unique doodle in honour of physicist and meteorologist Anna Modayil Mani in honour of her 104th birthday. She worked as the India Meteorological Department's deputy director general and was one of the country's first female scientists (IMD).

Mani made significant contributions to weather forecasting, and India's ability to predict the weather accurately was a result of her study. Additionally, she authored a number of publications on solar radiation, ozone, and wind energy devices. Her work opened the door for the country to utilise renewable energy.

Mani, a physics professional who was born in Peermade, Kerala, in 1918, had intended to pursue a career in dance but changed her mind after discovering her passion for the topic. She had been a voracious reader since she was a young child, having devoured nearly all of the volumes in her neighbourhood library.

Mani was awarded a fellowship in 1940 to conduct research at the Indian Institute of Science in Bengaluru. Here, she specialised in studying spectroscopy of diamonds and rubies under Nobel Laureate Sir C V Raman. She then left for London's Imperial College in 1945 and declared her specialty to be meteorological instrumentation.

In 1948, Mani left the IMD and went back to India. In India, she had a particular interest in building local infrastructure for weather forecasting, and by 1953, she was in charge of the division. Under her leadership, more than 100 meteorological sensors were standardised and made simpler for production.

Mani was among the first proponents of sustainable energy in India during the 1950s after publishing a number of papers on the measurement of sustainable energy. Later on, she started a business that produced solar and wind energy equipment.

Mani also had influential positions at the World Meteorological Organization of the UN. For her outstanding contributions to science in 1987, she was awarded the INSA K R Ramanathan Medal.
In Thiruvananthapuram, Mani passed away on August 16, 2001. In honour of her legacy, the World Meteorological Organization published her profile and interview on the occasion of her 100th birthday in 2018.
