Okay, let's start off by saying that there is no age restriction for selection to any Indian team, including district, state, or national teams.

 

To further emphasis that point, I'll also mention that, as a player gets older, his odds of being selected gradually decline, which is very evident.

 

Now, you must be good and persistent if you want to be chosen for the district team. Because, well, let's just say it takes time, good implies essentially good and persistent.


You therefore play for a school, which is the method and has worked for me. You represent a school team in interschool competitions run by the state's governing organization for sports ( In my case I played for my school in games organized by the Ahmedabad Cricket Association under Gujarat Cricket Association cover). You play well in those matches (this is where the persistent point comes in, as oftentimes strong performance does not guarantee a position) and get called up for the District team selection. You are on the team if you perform well in the selection process. When you consistently perform well at the district level, you are called up to the state.


To our dismay, even though the process appears to be seamless on paper. It is a time-consuming, difficult, politically motivated, and preference-based process that either requires you to be highly talented and diligent or that a relative must be on the selection committee.


 Almost all of the states experience this. It's possible that this isn't true in every state. States with small populations and little popularity may only have one selection process: perform well in school competitions, and you're in ( for e.g., Assam, Meghalaya and the like).


In my earlier responses, I made sure to let my readers know that politics and population are the two biggest issues preventing players from being chosen.
