The "amma" (mother) and "muthassi" (grandmother) of Malayalam poetry, Balamani Amma, is still revered today. The poet Balamani Amma received many honours and accolades, including the Padma Bhushan in 1987, the Sahitya Akademi Award in 1965, and the Saraswati Samman in 1995.

With a picture of the poet composing while seated between books in a white sari, the Google Doodle honouring Banamani Amma featured the poet. Numerous Malayalam poets have been inspired by Balamani Amma. The Balamani Amma Award, presented by the Kochi International Book Fair, provides writers with a monetary award in her honour.

Balamani Amma: who was she?

On July 19, 2022, the Google Doodle will honour Balamani Amma, a well-known Indian author widely referred to as the Grandmother of Malayalam literature, on her 113rd birthday. She was born on this day in 1909 in Nalapat, her family's residence in Punnayurkulam, a district of Thrissur.

Balamani Amma was educated at home by her uncle Nalappat Narayan Menon, a well-known Malayali poet, rather than receiving any professional training or schooling. Balamani Amma wed V.M. Nair, the managing director and managing editor of the Malayalam newspaper Mathrubhumi, when she was 19 years old.

Balamani Amma: What makes her the grand-daughter of Malayalam literature?

At the age of 21, Balamani Amma wrote her first poetry, "Kooppukai," in 1930. Her initial acknowledgement as a talented poet came from Parikshith Thampuran, the king of the Kingdom of Cochin, who also gave her the Sahithya Nipuna Puraskaram.

As a voracious scholar of Indian mythology, her poetry frequently challenges preconceived notions about women's roles. Early poems by Balamani Amma portrayed parenthood in a positive light, earning her the moniker "poetess of motherhood."

Despite adopting the concepts and narratives of mythological figures, Balamani Amma's paintings portrayed women as strong figures who nevertheless had their human characteristics.
