India's and the subcontinent's whole history of cricket is built on the emergence and expansion of the British Raj through the East India Company. First-class cricket in India may have begun with a match between Madras and Calcutta in 1864. The game was immediately embraced by Indian elites, who both competed against one another and with British teams.
The Bombay Presidency Match, which later developed into the Bombay Triangular and the Bombay Quadrangular, was the most significant event of the 19th century. Before receiving first-class status in 1892–1893, the match was first played in 1877 and then infrequently for several seasons.
The first foreign team to tour India was a George Vernon-led English squad in 1889–1890, but none of the games it took part in are regarded as top-class.
They mastered the skills necessary to compete in Presidency matches against the Europeans by 1892.
The Hindus started playing first-class cricket in 1907. The tournament became the Triangular tournament. In 1912, the Muslims also entered the arena of first-class cricket. The tournament was then called the Quadrangular Tournament, with four teams – the Europeans, the Pareses, The Hindus and the Muslims – playing each other.
